Movement Pattern and Survival of Deer in Missouri — Jon McRoberts Two research projects underway in Missouri are monitoring movement patterns and survival of deer in Missouri. With one in the NW part of the state and the other in the Ozarks, hunters from all corners of the state will benefit from the info they will be presented. Come listen as Jon McRoberts explains the secrets of deer movement and how you can utilize that info to help you find, pattern, and harvest mature deer. He will also talk about deer survival and mortality. This will help you identify ways to increase age structure and buck-to-doe rations, steps critical to increasing the number of mature deer in your area.
State of Deer in Missouri — Jason Sumners State Deer Biologist Jason Sumners takes to the floor to give a "State of the Deer Herd" address. With so many variables impacting the deer herd and hunting seasons the last couple years and those to come, Jason will take you through what they know about the current state of the herd, what changes to the management plan have been enacted, and what that means to the over 400,000 deer hunters in Missouri. He is one of the nation's foremost experts in deer biology, so you won't want to miss his presentation. Immediately following will be a Q&A session for those wanting to know more. Elk — David Hasenbeck As the Elk restoration effort continues in the SE part of the state, David Hasenbeck reflects on how the program started, how it is progressing, and what to expect in the future. Not all of us can make it to the Ozarks in hopes of catching a glimpse of these magnificent creatures so sit back and let David bring them to you. A multi-media presentation will highlight the Department's efforts to work with landowners, critical habitat, and other state agencies that make the restoration effort possible. David has been there since the beginning and will be offering insight into every aspect of the program. Food Plots for Deer and Wildlife — Jamie Barton Food plots are a great way to enhance your property's potential to attract wildlife, but it involves more than scratching the ground and tossing out seed. If you've had questions on how to get started or how to maximize your current plots, come listen as Jamie Barton breaks down the comprehensive effort required to make them the most effective. As a private land conservationist, he knows the ins and outs of a successful plan to improve your plot's potential. He's implemented these practices in many counties known for their giant deer so his session is one you don't want to miss! Deer Habitat Enhancement — Jeff Esely To follow up on food plots, listen as Jeff Esely draws up, implements, and evaluates plans to improve your overall deer habitat. There is so much more a hunter can do to improve his chances of viewing deer year round and keeping them close when the season arrives. If you wonder what you can do on your property and would like to know from a local expert, plan to attend this presentation. Jeff's expert ideas will be discussed along with how you can work with the Department of Conservation to improve your deer habitat and hunting success. Mountain Lions & Bears, Oh my! — Jeff Beringer We've all read about the bear someone's dog chased off in the local paper or seen the blurry picture of a mountain lion on the back property line of the local gas station. But really, what's going on with mountain lions and bears in Missouri? Jeff Beringer knows. He plans to deliver the latest data regarding our state's largest predators and will separate fact from fiction. Listen as he dispels the myths of these far too often misunderstood animals. Come hear the truth about Missouri's bears and mountain lions. Trail Cam 201 — Cory Smith An advanced look into the world of trail cameras for avid outdoorsmen. This seminar provides a thorough breakdown of one of the greatest tools a serious hunter can utilize to harvest a trophy whitetail. CS Outdoors owner, Cory Smith, will explain trail cam tactics, unique scouting tips and the limitless ways hunters can benefit from proper trail cam operation. |

Upon completion of his work in Mississippi, Jason attended Texas A&M University–Kingsville where his work focused on breeding success of white-tailed deer and the scale-dependent genetic structure of deer populations. His work includes a long-term study of buck breeding success on in South Texas. Jason had the opportunity in 2008 to return to his home state as a deer biologist with the Missouri Department of Conservation. In 2011 he assumed the role of Deer Program Coordinator. Jon McRoberts
Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, University of Missouri Jon developed an early appreciation for the outdoors on the family farm in northeast Missouri. Countless days spent hunting and fishing led Jon to the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife as an undergraduate at the University of Missouri. After graduating from MIZZOU, Jon completed his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Wildlife Science from Texas Tech University. In 2014, Jon had the opportunity to return to the University of Missouri to coordinate a large white-tailed deer research project taking place in northwest and southcentral Missouri. The cooperative 5-year study between the University of Missouri and the Missouri Department of Conservation will mark deer with GPS collars and assess their survival, movement patterns, and population growth rates. Jon has conducted wildlife research in distant parts of the globe including Southern Africa, China, Thailand, and the Yucatan Peninsula, but rural Missouri remains his favorite place to be. Jon is a strong proponent of sustainable-use in wildlife management and recognizes hunting as an important tool for wildlife conservation. To learn more about the Missouri deer research project visit: http://snr.missouri.edu/deer/ Jeff Esely
Mo Dept. of Conservation A certified wildlife biologist, Jeff Esely works for the Missouri Department of Conservation as a Private Land Conservationist. As such, he spends much of his time assisting landowners in managing their property and habitat to promote deer, turkey and other wildlife. Jeff is a firm believer that creating quality habitat can dramatically boost wildlife populations. However, improving habitat requires that you first critically evaluate existing conditions. To do this effectively, you must understand the life history and habitat requirements of your target species, and then look at things through the eyes of the critters you want to promote. Joe Allen
